Alcohol & Drug Policy

Briton Marines Shipping is committed to maintaining a safe and effective working environment on its vessels. The abuse of drugs and alcohol can significantly impair a seafarer’s ability to perform their duties, increase the risk of marine accidents, and affect overall safety. This policy aims to prevent substance abuse and ensure that all crew members are fit for duty at all times.

This policy applies to all seafarers and onboard personnel of Briton Marines Shipping, including officers, crew members, and any other individuals working on Company vessels.

3. Policy Statement

3.1 Prohibition

• Substances: The use, possession, distribution, or sale of illicit drugs, as well as the misuse of legitimate drugs, is strictly prohibited on Company vessels. This includes any substances that impair job performance or contribute to unusual behaviour.

• Alcohol: The consumption of alcohol is prohibited during working hours and while on duty. Crew members must not report for duty under the influence of alcohol.

3.2 Testing

• Random Testing: To deter and detect substance abuse, all officers and crew members will be subject to surprise random drug and alcohol tests conducted by the Company’s designated doctor at least once annually.

• Reasonable Suspicion Testing: Testing may also be conducted if there is reasonable suspicion of substance abuse based on observed behaviour or performance.

• Post-Incident Testing: Testing will be carried out following any marine incident or accident where substance abuse is suspected to be a contributing factor.

3.3 Impairment

• Seafarers found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be permitted to perform their duties until they are no longer impaired. Immediate measures will be taken to ensure that the impaired individual is not engaged in any job that could compromise safety.

4. Compliance and Enforcement

• The Company will exercise due diligence to enforce this policy and ensure compliance among all personnel. Any violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

• The policy will remain in force unless specifically amended or revoked by the Company.

5. Assistance and Support

• The Company encourages seafarers who are struggling with substance abuse issues to seek help. Confidential support and assistance programs are available to all employees.

6. Confidentiality

• All testing results and related information will be handled with the utmost confidentiality and in compliance with applicable legal requirements.

7. Policy Review

• This policy will be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to ensure it remains effective and in compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
